  • Basic command line UNIX tutorial
    • Run through lessons 1-4 for an introduction, and 5-8 for advanced lessons. Lesson 8 uses a tsch shell where as most everyone else uses bash and thus setting paths and environmental variables is slightly different.
    • You'll need access to a shell. Look for the Terminal application on Mac OS X, console or terminal in Linux, and puTTY in Windows. For Windows, you actually need to log into our guest account on one of the core Linux servers to follow along with the tutorial. Macs and Linux users can use their local shell application. To login to the core Linux server from Windows, find puTTY or download it. After downloading, double click the icon, enter hci-bio1.hci.utah.edu in the Host Name field, select the SSH protocol button, and hit "Open" at the bottom. A session window will open and prompt you for a login. Enter 'guest' and when prompted for a password enter the password (contact us). That should log you into hci-bio1 and the bash linux shell.
